Let me tell you a little secret: I don’t expect your home to be perfect. In fact, if you’ve got toys on the floor, a stack of mail on the counter, or a dog bed where the coffee table should be—I promise, you’re in good company.
As a designer, I’m not coming in to critique your space like a magazine editor. I’m here to partner with you, get to know your lifestyle, and create a space that feels like you. Over the years (and especially since starting Signature Styles by Brit), I’ve noticed that many clients walk into our first consultation feeling nervous or like they need to “clean up” their home or their ideas.
So here are five things I really want you to know before we meet for your design consultation:
1.Your House Doesn’t Need to Be Magazine-Ready—Seriously!
Seriously. I expect people to live in their homes. We all have that one corner that collects things, or that drawer we just don’t talk about (mine included!). Your home tells the story of your life, and I love getting to know how you use your space—messy bits and all.
My own home isn’t showroom-perfect, because that’s not my style either. Life is busy, especially with kids, pets, and all the day-to-day things we juggle. I’m not here to judge—I’m here to help.
2.Inspiration Photos Are a Game-Changer
I always ask each decision-maker to send me five inspiration photos before we meet. Why? Because those images give me valuable insight into what you’re drawn to—colors, textures, layouts, even little details you might not realize you love.
If there are two people involved in the decision-making, I want to make sure everyone feels heard. I’ll look for overlap in your photos (maybe you both love wood accents, clean lines, or cozy textures), and use that as a starting point for a design that feels good to both of you.
Your home should be a space you actually want to be in—not something that only one person loves while the other just tolerates.
3. Prepping Your Mindset is Just as Important as Prepping Your Home
Depending on the project, I might recommend bringing in a professional organizer before we start making design decisions. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about clarity.
If your space is filled with things you haven’t touched in years, it can be hard to envision something new. Organizers help create a fresh foundation, and I can incorporate their suggestions into your design to make sure everything functions beautifully. Design isn’t just about looks—it’s about living with intention.
And if we’re doing a full renovation? Know that it will take a toll—mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to live through a reno, and I’m here to help you prepare, plan, and power through it with support.
4. I Can Help You Vet Contractors, Too
If your project involves hiring contractors, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I can walk through your project with potential contractors, ask the right questions, and make sure the person you hire understands your vision.
This is your home—we want to make sure you’re trusting it to the right team. I’ve seen what happens when the wrong team is hired, and I’m here to help you avoid that heartache.
5. Not Every Project is a Total Overhaul—And That’s Okay
Design help doesn’t have to mean gutting your kitchen or knocking down walls. Some of my favorite projects are simple updates that make a space feel new—like choosing the perfect paint color, refreshing hardware, or creating an intentional layout that just works better.
During your consultation, we’ll talk through your goals, budget, and timeline. Whether you’re looking for a facelift or a full transformation, I’ll meet you where you’re at and help you move forward with a clear plan.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, my job isn’t just about making things pretty—it’s about helping you feel proud of your space. Whether you rent or own, have a big budget or a shoestring one, my goal is the same: to help you live in a space that feels like you.
So take a deep breath, don’t worry about the laundry on the couch, and let’s talk about your goals. I’m here to support you—judgment-free and design-ready.
