When Your House Tells You “Nope… It’s Reno Time”

Renovations are fun when they’re the ones you want to do… not so fun when they’re the ones you have to do. We had big plans to save for some other projects, but the front of our house had a few secrets hiding under paint and bargain-bin materials from the previous owners. Honestly, the fact that it lasted us 7 years after moving in feels like a small miracle.

The big culprit? Six rotting pillars that hold up our upstairs porch. Yep, structural… so this instantly moved from “someday” to “today.”

Our downstairs porch tile was technically fine, except for one missing corner piece and the fact that it was slicker than snot when it rained or even just got humid. Combine that with a color I’ve secretly hated since day one (think baby blue with Roman details on a 1970s brick Colonial Revival) and yeah… time to say goodbye.

The good news is I found a fun tile that modernizes the exterior while still playing nice with the existing details we’re keeping. We’ll also be swapping out the railing and reworking those pillars into more of a Craftsman style… just a hint of detail to suit the home’s age but enough to make the front feel fresh. The best part is this sets the tone for when you walk inside. The modernized kitchen and refreshed downstairs will finally flow with the exterior because we’ll be pulling the same stain color from inside to outside. Intentional… inviting… like the house is finally telling one cohesive story.

I’ll be sharing a TikTok video soon with some progress clips so you can see how it all comes together. If you love a good before-and-after, follow along… and if your own home is hinting (or shouting) that it’s time for a refresh, reach out. I’d be happy to help you create a plan that feels intentional and inviting for your space too.
